The Parents’ Association

Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College welcomes parent/carer involvement in the College. Parents and carers are able to join The Parents’ Association, which organises a number of events to support the school or stand for election to the College Council. We believe that if parents and carers are involved in the College, it will model involvement and engagement for students. It will also result in common positive conversations related to schooling and learning. Parents and carers serve as advocates for the school because they understand the way the school works and because they feel welcome to contribute. 

The Parents’ Association is a friendly and welcoming gathering of parents and carers who have a child or children at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College. This group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7pm.

All members of the college community are warmly invited to become active committee members or, if unable, to support The Parents’ Association by becoming financial members ($50 per annum) as well as supporting fundraising activities.

The Parents’ Association raises in excess of $50,000 annually, which helps support the many opportunities the College affords our children and which can only be offered by the extra funds raised by the College community. The Parents’ Association welcomes new members constantly. The unique nature of this group allows parents and carers the freedom to attend whatever meetings they can and to put their hand up to help out when they can – every little bit helps!

The Parents’ Association’s aim is to ‘strengthen the college community’ by providing support in a variety of ways:

  • Welcoming new parents and carers into the College

  • Offering a forum for parents and carers to raise and discuss issues of interest or concern

  • Promoting contact between parents and carers in the form of social events

  • Organising working bees to ensure a safe, attractive College environment

  • Enriching the relationship between parents, carers, staff and students by providing assistance at College events

  • Fundraising in order to purchase additional equipment for the College

School Council

The School Council has a very important role to play in the organisation of a school. Elections for School Council are held at the start of each year and information is available in the first newsletter of each year.

The responsibilities of school council include:

  • Developing the strategic plan (the document that tells people what the school wants to achieve in the future and how it plans to get there);

  • Approving the annual budget (the financial plan for the calendar year that tells people how the school is going to provide money so it can implement its strategic plan in that year);

  • Setting and reviewing policies (guiding principles designed to influence decisions, actions that the school makes);

  • Developing, reviewing and monitoring both the Student Code of Conduct. (how the school expects students to behave, how bullying will be managed and the school’s approach to managing student behaviour) and the School Dress Code (this includes how students are expected to dress during school hours including travelling to and from school, if the school has a uniform and what that looks like, and any arrangement with clothing suppliers that the school might enter into);

  • Raising money for things that the school needs

  • Making sure the school’s grounds and buildings are maintained

  • Entering into contracts for things like cleaning  the school or a school council building project creating interest in the school within the community; and principal selection.

Each year in early December, The Parents’ Association holds the second hand book sale. The sale provides families with an opportunity to sell text books that are no longer needed and to purchase books at second hand prices. Information about this year’s Book Sale will be published in early December.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop is open on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 3:30pm. There are no appointments. We encourage students to visit the Uniform Shop during recess and lunch times.
